INDIA 2050 : WEAVING TRADITIONS IN TOMORROW'S URBAN FABRIC

Woody Allen once remarked, "Tradition is the illusion of permanence." We frequently put current demands ahead of cultural heritage as technology and modernization develop, which erodes cultural identities and creates potentially dangerous conditions for the next generations. Creating a balance between upholding tradition and welcoming modernity is crucial to ensuring that development honours and incorporates our cultural heritage.

The Travinza-themed reimagining of traditional Indian architecture within the urban fabric of 2050 offers a visionary glimpse into the future, assuring to creation of architecture and design that is sustainable, socially responsible, and culturally meaningful.
This symposium will explore pivotal themes that will shape the future of architecture and design, offering deep insights into current challenges and innovative solutions. Focusing on these essential themes, the symposium aims to illuminate the path forward, demonstrating how integrating sustainable practices can tackle urgent environmental and societal concerns while shaping the architectural landscape of tomorrow.

AR. DEAN D' CRUZ

AR. EUGENE PANDALA

Ar. Dean D’Cruz is a visionary Indian architect whose journey began at the prestigious J. J. College of Architecture in Mumbai. After establishing his practice in Goa in 1989, he co-founded Mozaic Design in 2001, where sustainability became the cornerstone of his architectural philosophy. Recognizing the urgent challenges posed by climate change, Dean has actively engaged in workshops and seminars, sharing his expertise on architecture, planning, and environmental design. His innovative work has garnered attention both in India and internationally, with publications in leading architectural magazines.

Ar.Eugene Pandala is an Architect, Urban Designer and Heritage Conservator. His passion for Natural Heritage conservation, transposed him to explore deeper into Affordable sustainable development and Architecture. A BBC story described architect Eugene Pandala’s work as “a glorious return to tradition, deftly adapted to modern-day needs”.

Known to be an architect sensitive to environmental needs, Ar Pandala has found inspiration in vernacular approaches in his country, and has created several beautiful projects. His buildings establish a relationship with nature, they are not ostentatious, they are climate-friendly.

Dr. Benny Kuriakose recieved basic lessons in architecture under the tutelage of the renowned Laurie Baker. His deep knowledge and love for vernacular architecture guides his design process and he aims to pass this onto the next generations.While practising he decided to pursue his research interests in mass housing and graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras with a doctorate in 2015. He has worked on all sorts of projects, from small mud cottages to tsunami reconstruction housing.

His deep knowledge and love for vernacular architecture and craftsmanship guide his design process and he tries to teach and pass on his knowledge to the next generations of architects and designers. He loves to travel, has visited more than 40 countries, and collects antiques in his spare time.

DR. BENNY KURIAKOSE

Ar. Krithika Karuppiah is a contemporary architect whose interest in the traditional Indian architecture developed when she was a student of Architecture. She became interested in Vastu architecture when she investigated it as a project for her degree completion. After completing a Bachelor’s Degree of Architecture from Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science and a Masters Degree in Architecture from Lawrence Technological University, Michigan, she joined the staff of the illustrious Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati and Associates as an architect. Taught classes for foreign delegates during the annual workshops on Sthapatya Veda and Vaastu Shastras conducted by the International Institute of Mayonic Science and Technology in Chennai and at the American University of Mayonic Science and Technology in the US.

A pioneer in women's technical education, Ponni Concessao was the first women undergraduate student of the prestigious National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli. She won the Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Institute of Technology for the Golden Jubilee Celebrations and received the Honor from His Excellency the President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam.

Along with her husband founded Oscar & Ponni Architects in Chennai. Architect Dr. Ponni M. Concessao is the first woman architect in Asia to design a State Secretariat in India, Telangana State, Hyderabad.

Architect Dr. Ponni's award winning work has covered all large prototypes of town planning, buildings and interiors in all parts of India.
